UK:  Commercial Refrigerator Supplier Reftrade UK has successfully installed NaturaLINE – the world’s first refrigeration system to use CO2 as a natural refrigerant – across its container fleet.

Carrier's NaturaLINE uses two stages of compression, which when installed, improves the overall efficiency of the unit. The technology includes a custom-designed, variable-speed drive that controls the compressor. The drive electronically adjusts the compressor’s speed to provide the precise amount of cooling capacity to meet demand, saving considerable energy compared to conventional units.

Greg Spence, managing director of Reftrade UKGreg Spence, managing director of Reftrade UK said, said “Understanding our client’s requirements and ensuring we are offering them the most pioneering refrigeration solutions on the market is important to us at Reftrade UK. Reducing their carbon footprint and adopting technology that has less impact on the environment is of great importance to the oil and gas industry, acknowledging this, we have modified our fleet of units to include the latest, environmentally friendly, CO2 technology.

“It has been recorded that the NaturaLINE technology can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 28% compared with other units. The technology is set to significantly reduce on-board power generation requirements, allowing offshore vessels to save the fuel used to generate the electricity needed to power the units. The new, upgraded units will help our clients reduce operating costs and increase energy efficiency.

“We have taken the proactive decision to make each of our units as environmentally friendly as possible, exceeding both UK and European regulative standards. I am confident that the upgrades to the Reftrade UK fleet will be welcomed by both existing and new clients.”

The Roll out of the NaturaLINE system will see Reftrade UK take a market-lead as the only supplier of refrigerated containers to offer the environmentally friendly technology.

CANADA:  Smartcool Systems has announced initial results of 18% energy savings from an evaluation of their energy efficiency technology on two sea-going refrigerated containers.

George Burnes, President and CEO of Smartcool said:

"This is an exciting new market that we are entering, not only does it offer a huge amount of potential on its own, but it is also highly complementary to our established customer base of food retailers. Our major supermarket customers depend on refrigerated transportation as an integral part of their business. Offering a new solution to address the costly energy consumption in this sector will open the doors to new customers and provide a lucrative value-added offering to our existing customers."

Chris Lefaivre, VP of Operations, said:

"This market has vast untapped potential. Options for refrigerated transportation companies to reduce their operating costs are few and far between. By offering our solution to make their refrigeration systems more energy efficient, we will be assisting cold freight transportation companies with their bottom line and their green initiatives. It is a multi-million dollar opportunity for Smartcool and we are thrilled to be seeing such strong test results right at the start."

Currently, the ECO3 hardware platform is being used to deliver Smartcool's proprietary software algorithms to this new application. Further testing on over-the-road refrigerated trailers will be completed in the second quarter, prior to a number of pilot installations.

If the testing proves successful, it could lead the development of a new hardware platform powered by Smartcool’s software, a platform designed specifically for the refrigerated transportation sector which includes over-the-road trailers, box trucks, sea-going containers and rail containers. Globally, there are over 5.5 million refrigerated trucks and trailers, and an additional 2 million refrigerated sea-going containers
