UK:  Resource Data Management has launched a new energy dashboard called Kwheb, which give end users unprecedented information and control over energy usage at individual store, national estate or global level.

The internet-based system draws together data from all energy-using equipment on a network, and presents it in clear graphical form, enabling users to get an immediate at-a-glance view of current energy usage as well as historical trends.

Kwheb harnesses the ability of RDM products to configure and control energy-using plant, while reading a wide range of smart power meters and pulse counters. This gives users the ability progressively to optimise equipment, while seeing the resultant changes in energy burn in real time.

It can focus on any scale of resolution, from a single item of plant, a store, building or factory, up to a national or global estate made up of many thousands of locations.

Once base energy costs have been set, it displays the cost of energy used in a range of currencies, and enables historical comparisons to be made between energy consumption for the current period against the same period last year, last month or last week.

In addition to monitoring electricity use, it can be used to monitor gas consumption, and - where electronically metered - water usage. Stored data can be exported to Excel for further analysis and more detailed reporting.

The latest version, the dmTouch, is equipped with the industry’s first fully interactive colour multi-touch-screen interface, enabling installers, clients and service staff to quickly configure the system and navigate to areas of interest.

CANADA:  Smartcool Systems Inc. today announced it has now received approval for beta testing of Smartcool's energy efficiency technology with a Florida-based food distribution firm.

This test is the next phase in introducing Smartcool's technology to the refrigerated transportation sector. As we previously reported the first phase produced 18% energy savings from an evaluation of their energy efficiency technology on two sea-going refrigerated containers.

Currently refrigerated transport accounts for about 20% of all goods transported, with millions of sea-bound containers, box trucks, and trailers using high amounts of energy to keep goods cold.

George Burnes, President and CEO of Smartcool states, "In our first phase of testing, we have already proven that our technology can yield significant savings on refrigerated transport compressor run time and energy consumption. Now we are aiming to translate these savings into diesel fuel saved, as this is the measurement that operators are looking for. Diesel fuel in Europe costs almost twice as much as in North America, and in both regions prices are on the rise. This indicates a huge opportunity for us to offer a valuable solution to our existing customers as well as giving us an edge in opening the door with new customers."

The 2nd round of testing set to take place in the next couple of weeks and Smartcool is keen to complete this next phase so they can roll out the technology across the food distribution firms 115 trailers.  

Bruce Kemp, Smartcool's Technical Director, explains the beta test. "Our beta site offers the perfect opportunity for us to test our technology on a fully loaded frozen food trailer. The food distribution company has two identical side-by-side refrigerated trailers storing 35,000 lbs. of frozen turkeys and running 24/7. The monitoring and verification equipment will be installed on both trailers, while Smartcool's technology will be installed on only one of the trailers. This allows us to see the savings we can achieve in one trailer compared to how the other identical trailer refrigeration system would perform without Smartcool installed. We will be able to monitor all aspects of system performance including box temperature, compressor cycles and diesel fuel flow."

Yamaha Motor Intelligent Machines has secured a global agreement with HVAC and refrigeration equipment innovator Carel Industries.

Yamaha will supply precision high-speed surface-mount systems to Carel’s international manufacturing network spanning Italy, Brazil, China and USA.

Carel will use this equipment to build computerised controllers, electronic compressor drives, and networking and sensing modules used in its advanced air-conditioning and refrigeration systems for industrial, data-centre, and consumer markets.

While finalising terms at Yamaha Intelligent Machines Europe headquarters in Dusseldorf, Luigi Rossi Luciani, President of Carel, said, “Our initial benchmarking in Italy demonstrated the advanced features, accuracy and flexibility we need to deliver the most technologically advanced products to our customers. CANADA:  Smartcool Systems has announced initial results of 18% energy savings from an evaluation of their energy efficiency technology on two sea-going refrigerated containers.

Resource Data Management (RDM), the leading control and monitoring company, has introduced the Intuitive Power Store to protect refrigeration systems from damage following power outages.

Refrigeration compressors, as used across the food and drink industry, can suffer severe damage following start-up after a power failure as a result of stepper valves being out of sequence and in the wrong place.

This can lead to liquid refrigerant entering the compressor crankcase, resulting in low oil pressure and possible failure. Resultant damage can shorten compressor working life or may be so serious that it requires complete replacement, representing a huge expense for end users.

Recognising the problem, RDM has developed the Intuitive Power Store which links to the company’s stepper valve controller, to provide protection against compressor damage on start-up following power failure.

The combination automatically closes stepper valves when mains power is lost. “It is effectively a mini Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) with a brain,” says Andrew Chandler, md of RDM.

In the event of mains power loss, the Power Store provides the energy to enable the stepper valve controller to accurately control the setting of the valve to a fully closed position. When mains power is restored, stepper valves are then returned to the correct operational settings gradually, in line with the evaporator duty required.  This means that the compressor is not hit with a large and unpredictable load before it is fully up and running, and in a safe operating condition to respond.

“Power outages are by no means uncommon, for all sorts of reasons. The cost of replacing compressors can be very significant for end users. The new RDM system gives refrigeration users the vital protection they need, and provides the opportunity to control system restart to ensure cooling power is delivered to where it is needed - while minimising the impact and potential damage on refrigeration plant.”

The company points out that the combination of Intuitive Power Store and stepper valve controller represents a fraction of the price of a compressor.
